A Model Intervention for Elder Abuse and Dementia
Developed by the Benjamin Rose Institute, Cleveland Area Alzheimer's Association, Cuyahoga County Adult Protective Services and North Eastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine WRGEC, this curriculum addresses identification, treatment and prevention of elder abuse in persons with dementia. It incorporates interactive exercises, case discussion guides and suggestions for new service protocols that emphasize communication and collaboration between agencies.

Developed in collaboration with The Ohio State University College of Medicine and Public Health, Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine, Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, and the WRGEC, this book is designed to be used by primary care providers who treat geriatric patients.  The topics in this book address common and relevant foot problems that a primary care physician or clinician may encounter in caring for an older adult, and it includes psychosocial and health disparities/ethnogeriatrics topics.  It addresses management, self-care, prevention, diagnosis, procedures and referral as well and provides an interactive CD, which is designed to accompany the book in demonstrating physical exams and treatment procedures. Pre and post tests are also included. Cost is $65. Funded through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Public Health Service, HRSA, BHPr.


 
A Guide for Individuals Who Care for Persons with Dementia: Preventing Stress from Becoming Harmful

This handbook was developed in collaboration with The Cleveland Area Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, The Benjamin Rose Institute, Cuyahoga County Department of Senior and Adult Services, The Office of Geriatric Medicine/Gerontology and Western Reserve Geriatric Education Center, Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine, and Western Reserve Consortium for the Prevention and Treatment of Elder Abuse.  It is a brief 7 page document and the Cleveland version can be downloaded by clicking the underlined title above.  This guide is meant to help caregivers recognize their levels of stress and to provide them with resources for help when stress levels get to a harmful level.  There is another version for the city of Akron which is available as a hard copy and can be obtained by contacting Jeanie Hengle at jhengle@neoucom.edu 


 
The HIPAA Privacy Rule and Long-Term Care: A Quick Guide for Researchers

Developed by Jane K. Straker and Patricia C. Faust from Scripps Gerontology Center at Miami University, this document is available online and as a hard copy. This research was funded as part of a grant from the Ohio General Assembly, the Ohio Board of Regents to the Ohio Long-Term Care Research Project.  Reprints are available from Scripps Gerontology Center, Miami University, Oxford, OH 45056, (513) 529-2914.  This booklet details how HIPAA regulations applies to and affects research, including long-term care research.

Cultural Competence

Introduction we provide data, historical examples, and a theory as tools for understanding discrimination and miscommunication. In Unit 1, we offer a clinical approach for understanding patients’ explanatory models of disease and wellness. In later units, we will address setting the stage for respectful care, developing health care partnerships, taking histories, conducting physical exams, negotiating treatment, and following through with care. The Introduction takes approximately 40 minutes, Unit 1: Explanatory Models is approximately 15 minutes.

Enhancing Safe and Supportive Communities for Vulnerable Elders: Bioterrorism and Emergency Preparedness and Response

This educational site is designed for health and service providers, law and safety forces, emergency personnel and public health professionals. The site provides information that will improve the community's ability to meet the health care needs of older adults in the event of a bioterrorist attack or emergency.

Center for Successful Aging Online Training Series

The Center for Successful Aging at Medical University of Ohio (MUO) has developed a series of online training modules on a wide variety of topics, mostly designed for MUO students.
