Cultural Competence
Introduction we provide data, historical examples, and a theory as tools for understanding discrimination and miscommunication. In Unit 1, we offer a clinical approach for understanding patients’ explanatory models of disease and wellness. In later units, we will address setting the stage for respectful care, developing health care partnerships, taking histories, conducting physical exams, negotiating treatment, and following through with care. The Introduction takes approximately 40 minutes, Unit 1: Explanatory Models is approximately 15 minutes.

Allied Health in Gerontology: Meeting Unmet Needs Case Studies
This website provides interactive cases of four older adults from minority communities receiving services in a variety of health care and/or social service systems. The cases include individual histories, discussion of functional needs and limitations, cultural values and beliefs, along with considerations for evaluation and intervention, with an emphasis on occupational and physical therapy. A fifth case discusses strategies ofr modifying the environment to reduce environmental press and enhance function. Each case includes links to additional resources.
Health Literacy in Patient Care: Helping Your Patients Understand
A CD developed by Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine (NEOUCOM) Department of Family Medicine, which contains 5 educational modules on health literacy. The modules are as follows:
1. The Impact of Literacy and Health Literacy on Patient Care
2. Effective Strategies for Verbal Communication with Patients
3. Characteristics of Easy-to-Read Print Materials
4. Teaching Patients Who Have Low Literacy Skills
5. Evaluating the Reading Level of Patient Education Materials
Each module takes about a half-hour to complete and may be completed independently from the others. Participants completing a module, including a post-test and program evaluation, may earn up to a maximum of 0.5 category 1 credits per module for a maximum of 2.5 credits if all 5 modules are completed. NEOUCOM designates this educational activity for a maximum of 0.5 category 1 credits per module toward teh AMA Physician's Recognition Award.
